Editor’s Note:  by Julie Israelson Welcome to Lincoln Middle, an IB World School’s Learning AFAR magazine for 2017!  These 9 days in Costa Rica have had an ever-lasting impact on the lives of twenty 7th grades and 3 educators.  While this is the 6th Costa Rica adventure that Lincoln has coordinated, each trip brings countless new discoveries, cherished experiences, meaningful encounters and deep self-reflection. International service learning has become an integral part of who we are as a Lincoln community, and the pages of this website will illustrate the potential that international travel and service have to transform the lives of humans across all age groups.  This invaluable trip helped our students develop essential life skills, such as self-advocating, independence, critical thinking, compassion, collaboration, and problem solving. Students walked away from the experience with life skills that cannot be gained through the four walls of a classroom. The No Barriers Learning AFAR trip to Costa Rica continually helps us achieve one of our most impactful goals as educators: empowering all of our students to see themselves as agents of positive change in the world.
